Q: What is the difference between marble and granite?
A: Appearance wise, granite and marble are largely similar. However, upon close examination, granite variations appear as flecking throughout the stone, while marble variations appear as colorful veins. When it comes to durability, granite is known to be more resistant to chips and scratches, but it all boils down to the type of marble/granite surface that you choose.
Q: What is the difference between quartz and marble/granite?
A: Quartz countertops aren’t entirely natural – they are artificially constructed. The composition of quartz is relatively uniform, resulting in lesser natural flecks and veins when compared to marble or granite.
Q: What is the difference between polished and honed marble?
A: Polished marble has a shiny, glossy finish. It is smooth and has a coating that acts as a protectant. Whereas for honed marble, it has a flatter finish and is less reflective. A scratch on a honed surface is less noticeable than on a polished surface. However, honed marble is more susceptible to stains as the stone pores are closer to the surface. Both marble types are suitable for most applications, depending on your preference.
Q: Which is cheaper – granite, marble or quartz?
A: It depends. The pricing of these surfaces depends on many factors, which include brand, thickness, size and even different variations of the same surface. Thinner or cheaper cuts of surfaces can result in poorer quality and lower durability, so contact us for a proper quote of a surface that suits you best!
Q: Which material lasts the longest?
A: Being naturally porous stones, granite and marble must be sealed properly to prevent staining. At Fine Work, every solid surface processed by us is sealed and polished to perfection before installation or handover. Marble and granite have been used as building materials for centuries, and their use in the most luxurious places, hotels and residences are testament of their beauty and resistance to time.

A: Regular maintenance such as removing dirt, grit and other materials on the stone surface is necessary, as with any other surface tops. These materials can potentially cause tiny scratches on your surface. Occasionally clean the surface with a damp cloth, and neutral cleaners when necessary. Spills should be cleaned immediately and refrain from having acidic liquids such as fruit juice, coffee and red wine stain your stone surfaces. Lastly, remember not to use bleach, vinegar or any acidic cleaners as that may result in degradation of your surface.

Q: How do I avoid staining my stone floors?
A: To avoid stains, make sure you keep acidic liquids and stain-causing materials from spilling on your marble surfaces. If that happens, carefully dab out and clean the spills immediately. The sealant applied on your stones helps to protect your marble floors, but depending on your length of use and foot traffic on the stone surfaces, sealants may have to be reapplied every now and then.
Q: Is maintenance of my stone surfaces easier as compared to other floor materials?
